I have become quite a minimalist when it comes to the children, I have only been to Babies R Us probably twice since Lily was born, once to buy a humidifier (which I returned, unopened) and once to buy her Jumperoo, that she really did not like. I did all of the "baby" things with Lukas, Brett and I spent 100.00 on "baby proofing" supplies, most of which did not fit our particular cupboards or appliances, were cheaply made and ineffective. The most effective means of "baby proofing" for us were getting rid of our coffee table, that was quite hazardous when Lukas was learning to walk, and just took up too much valuable play space on the floor, moved all of the cleaning supples and sharp kitchen utencils up to the top shelves of the cupboards, and, if we had stairs, I would probably get a baby gate. I think I tried every sippy cup that was around when Lukas was a toddler, they all tasted like plastic to me, until I found the sigg cups which we still use. Lukas had Gerber or Sassy plates, snack cups, utencils, everything. Lily got one package of baby spoons (the Sassy brand which are BPA free). Lily has never slept in a crib, really never sat in a stroller, I still have the same Maclaren we bought when Lukas was about 8 months old, and he still sits in it occasionally. Well, I also pack much lighter when we leave the house, most of the time I have a few diapers and maybe, maybe wipes. We went to South Coast plaza today, and typical, I had a diaper, no wipes...in Pottery Barn kids I started to smell something in Lily's pants, great, and Lukas was doing the peepee dance, so we left to go to the bathroom in baby gap, Lukas went potty, now he had to sit tight for a few minutes while I tried to change Lily's poopy diaper, without any baby wipes. If you have ever tried to change a poopy diaper with damp toilet paper, you know what I mean, it just doesnt work, the toilet paper rolls up and falls apart, my (standing)newly walking and independant 13 month old is despiratly tring to free herself from my grasp, now starts to pee. Omigoodness, I have not even taken the new diaper out of my bag, no wipes, diaper is not readily available, pee (and poop) everywhere. Meanwhile Lukas is saying, "Mommy I need to wash my hands", "I need to wash my hands" over and over again. Such a mess, so what do I do...I put Lily in the sink and wash her little bum and legs, I am thinking, I hope I locked that door, and no one sees me bathing my one year old in a public bathroom sink. I paper towel dry her off, put her new diaper on, pee soaked Pedi Peds in my wet bag for cloth diapers, Lily goes back in the carrier and help Lukas wash his hands. Wipe up the pee on the Koala changing table, and I did tell the baby gap ladies that we had an accident on the changing table, I wonder if they clean those changing tables, I know Lily is not the first baby to pee on one.
